Affiliate Summit East NYC 2010 Day 1 Observations #ASE10
Some observations and things I learned on Day 1
- Considering how many of the people I know that weren’t coming to Affiliate Summit this time around the place is PACKED! The meet market yesterday was extremely busy.
- There are more Faux Hawks per capita at an Affiliate Summit then the Jersey Shore.
- Some affiliates are cheap as hell. We had a dude jump in a cab with us yesterday and say he’d pay for the ride. The bill was $4.90 – He paid $5 but refused to tip the driver. lame
- There is a lot of change going on at the affiliate networks. I’ve heard of quite a few layoffs this week.
- I hear rumblings that certain (loved & respected) affiliate networks you THINK are doing well are being supported by only 3 or 4 affiliates.
- A lot of guys that have been in affiliate marketing for a LONNG time actually aren’t even doing affiliate marketing anymore. You would assume they are, but they are into other things at this point because they wanted more stability in their income.
- According to Jason @ Ads4Dough Seminar: Email data is worth 50 cents – $1.50 per record per month. SMS data is worth 5-10 cents per record. Phone data is worth $1-$5 per record. Physical mail data is worth 25-50 cents per record. If you ever broker data, make sure you seed the list so that you know what’s being mailed to it. B2Mobile is a good SMS partner. If you do an email list right the data is worth approximately $1 the first month, 50 cents per month for the next 4-5 months and has a lifespan of 6 months.
- I hear that affiliates are owed tons of outstanding money by affiliate networks.
- I hear that affiliate networks are owed tons of outstanding money by advertisers.
- The affiliates in the CPS space don’t seem to respect the affiliates in the CPA space and vice-versa – maybe it’s a lack of understanding what each type of affiliates’ business model is.
- Companies that hire models to work at their booth come off as desperate to me.
- People need to learn how to talk louder.

Missed Jason’s session and it was probably the most valuable out them all, can’t wait to catch the replay.
The CPS vs. CPA thing hasn’t made any sense to me. I’m gonna have to chat you up about this.
I didn’t realize that payouts were an issue. That’s pretty scary. I have never had a serious problem, but I have never had a payout bigger that $4000 for a month.

I’m one of the guys skipping out this year. I find Ad:Tech 10 times better anyway than Aff Summit.
The one that made my day, the dude paid $5.00 and didn’t tip the driver. Would it have really killed him to tip the driver $0.10 cents (or more) – then again, the recession must be hitting hard *sarcasm*
May be he is international? I remember first time I got to US, I didn’t tip pizza deliveries, restaurants as I didn’t even know you had to do that. Nobody does it in a lot of other countries. 🙂

@jesus, at ASE there has been plenty of people talking about what networks work for you and what ones just work you. Of course if you just take everyone’s word for shit the only 2 good networks representing are EWA and C2M.
Nice meeting you the other night Hustler. I loved the intro you gave at dinner haha. Probably the funniest thing I’ve seen all week, especially when they were just like “oh well nice to meet you” after wards.
One thing that I always notice at each Summit is how many self proclaimed “gurus” with Silver passes from the last Summit are no-shows this time around…

Were any services/companies listed that buy these records or are these just arbitrary numbers he threw out from his own experience. Seems like a HUGE generalization to say a record is worth $X without knowing any of the specifics and without providing buyers/martketplaces that support these numbers.

Then you should have paid the tip hustler. Why crib? Atleast he paid for the trip.
@wont tell: Prob because he found out AFTER. Not sure if you’ve ever taken a cab in NYC – but rarely do you learn that your “friend” has stiffed the driver until AFTER you are way out of the cab. Things move FAST here; the second you’re outta the cab that cabbie is gone.

I still don’t get how this tipping situation is an issue. Where I’m from servers typically make half of minimum wage and depend entirely on tips.
I heard some of the same shit from people at the bar “It’s an open bar, you don’t have to tip.” Drop $20 up front and keep the $1’s coming. It’s really simple to make sure you always have drinks coming your way when you’re waiting in the mad swarm of affiliate lushes trying to get a drink.
Throwing down $2-4 on a $5 cab ride is not going to break the bank, and you should be happy you didn’t get taken for a ride in a few circles prior to your destination. Shiesty, but even those guys get tipped.
Seriously, blows my mind how this is repeatedly brought up after every conference.
